However, S6K1 -/- skeletal muscle has high mitochondrial content accompanied by increased expression of mitochondrial genes, which protect against diet-induced obesity together with enhanced β-oxidation in white adipose tissue (WAT) (Um et al., 2004). A full understanding of mTOR signaling in the maintenance of skeletal muscle mass could help to develop mTOR-targeted therapeutics to prevent muscle wasting. In addition, the evidence that mTOR is a dual regulator of anabolism and catabolism in skeletal muscle mass will be discussed. In accordance with sperm competition theory, testosterone levels are shown to increase as a response to previously neutral stimuli when conditioned to become sexual in male rats. The reflexive testosterone increases in male mice is related to the male's initial level of sexual arousal.
